Somnium
A downloadable game for Windows
‘Somnium’ is a retro inspired first person dungeon crawler.
You play as Somnium, the main character of the game ‘Somnium’, who leaves the computer to invade the mind of one of its players. Your goal? To steal their dreams for your evil master, The Game Creator. However, the person whose mind you have invaded is dreaming about your game, turning what was supposed to be an easy steal into an exciting dungeon crawl.
Do you dare to delve through this dark low-poly dream? Experience 2 wildly different weapons, 4 different enemy types, a strange, dreamy dungeon-like environment, and delve deep into this dream. As the game goes on you will pick up multiple upgrades that slowly increase the power of your character. For additional replay value the game offers an optional timer to track how quickly you can get through the level.
This game is designed for everyone to play, with the assets being specifically designed to be readable from a distance, and a wide array of accessibility options, featuring (but not limited to): aim assist, color blindness filters and a simplified control scheme that is designed around the microsoft adaptable controller (and a one-handed mode designed for this controller specifically, although you can play the whole game with a mouse and keyboard).
This project has been developed by a team of 11 in 3 weeks. Our biggest influences have been Doom 64 and Delver, both in game genre and in visuals.
It all started at The Museum of Technology where we brainstormed our first versions of this project. There we realised that because our target age group often want to feel older than they are we would risk alienating them if we made a game that they saw as too childish. Therefore, we decided it was best if our game was age agnostic.
The first few days were chaotic as people started to work in different directions at the same time. Additionally, misunderstandings surrounding people's specialties and wishes for the project put unforeseen pressure on parts of the team. But, through clear communication we managed to set a course everyone was happy with. After that, with a clear course ahead, motivation and team spirit became our greatest strengths.
Everybody pulling their weight and taking responsibility for their tasks, paired with a strong no blame culture created a very positive work environment that let us focus on making as good a product as we could, as opposed to handling conflicts within the team.
