EXSTREAM
A downloadable game for Windows
We received an RFP that requested a mobile game with an “extreme sport” theme, with a target group of extreme sport & racing enthusiasts. We started off with researching what extreme sport our game would be about. We landed on “BASE jumping” after a few rounds of votes. After this, we figured out what gameplay loop & narrative the game would have. Meanwhile, the programmers were setting up the project in unity, while the artists were sketching different environments the game could take place in. We took a lot of inspiration from the game “Superflight”, especially with the concept of collecting points by flying really close to in-game structures. Our visuals were inspired by ancient architecture or nature phenomenon, such as chinese pagodas or the mountains of zhangjiajie. We incorporated the racing & coop themes via our narrative, by making the player (streamer) collect more points (views) than another player (streamer), during a set amount of time. When we had the concept figured out, the programmers started prototyping the controls & world generation. With these prototypes & concepts we got our game greenlit. We continued developing the levels, while refining the movement, score system & environments until deadline. We received a lot of good feedback during the development process, but the jury gave us more bad than good feedback due to unclear goals, nonlinear worlds & lack of VFX among other things. Our takeaways from this project are that a strong game concept can still give mediocre results if you “run out of steam” in the middle of the project. Always try to balance concept & tech development, otherwise the game might end up under-developed on one aspect & over-developed on the other.
